The apparition of Our Lady at San Gregorio San Gregorio

The first Marian apparitions recognized by the Church , told by St. Gregory of Nyssa
Domenico Seasoned

San Gregorio Neocaesarea Healer was born in Pontus, the current Niksa, Turkey, around 213, from a noble pagan family. In the city where he studied grammar and rhetoric, he learned Latin, and acquired the rudiments of law. Later he went to Caesarea in Palestine, with his brother Athenodorus, with the idea of completing law studies in nearby Beirut. In the Palestinian town, the two brothers met the great Christian teacher Origen, that Caesar had founded a new school, having been banished from Alexandria. The knowledge of Origen upset projects of Gregory and Athenodorus and determined their conversion. Gregory described the meeting as well with Origen and his adherence to Christian faith: "Like a spark, then, immessaci in the heart, on the one hand, burned, flushed in our love for the Word holy, most loving, after all that entices with its ineffable beauty, second, to the man his friend and interpreter. I love pierced, causing them to neglect other activities and studies that appeared to be suitable for us and even my more beautiful, the home, the relatives who lived in Caesarea and for which we had embarked on the journey. Only one was the object of my love, my love: the philosophy taught that the divine man "(Gregory Healer, Address to Origen , a cura di E. Marotta, Città Nuova Editrice, Roma 1933, p. 66). At this time the apparition of Our Lady to St. Gregory the Healer, the first Marian apparitions recognized by the Church. There provides a detailed account of St. Gregory of Nyssa (about 335-395) in his Life of Gregory Healer, and is the first story of a Marian apparition:
"So then, forced to submit to the yoke, after they were he fulfilled all the requirements in rituals, having asked those who had proclaimed that the bishop will give a little 'time to learn more about the mystery, she thought, as the Apostle says, he must not take counsel with flesh and more blood, but asked that the mystery gli fosse rivelato immediatamente da Dio. He then, frightened at the sight, got out of bed and asked who he was and why he came. And having calmed the other, his voice calm, his mind agitated and having answered that he had appeared for God's will, because of disputes which struggled in its environment, so that it revealed the truth of the true faith, he, in these words, took courage and looked with astonishment and joy. But after having the other stretched out his hand forward, showed him with his finger pointing what appeared alongside. Having run with his hand pointed his eyes, el'aver seen in front of another female ghost dressed in truly than can be seen in human terms, this terrified him again. He then, being embarrassed by the spectacle, he lowered his face, for, among other things, his eyes could not endure the vision (that is the miracle of vision consisted mainly in that, although the night, along with those that they appeared, a strong light shone like that of a lighted torch, beautifully bright). Since, therefore, could not stand watching his eyes, listened to the speech that those who had appeared together on the issue were discussed, in this way was not only educated on the true knowledge of faith, but also knew the names of those who they appeared, since they both called each other with your name. It is said that from what had appeared in female dress felt the urge to explain to the young evangelist John the mystery of true religion, and he replied that he is ready to help in this the Mother of the Lord, because she liked it. And so, after describing the issue in a convenient and well-defined, suddenly disappeared from sight. And he immediately wrote down the divine teaching, and, after that, he preached in the church in the same way, and that teaching left to posterity as an inheritance given by God to this day the people of that city, which remained immune heretical from every mistake, you learned through this teaching "(Gregory of Nyssa, Gregory Taumaturgo Life, edited by Leo L., New City Editrice, Roma 1988, p. 50-51). The writing of the Healer, to which it relates Gregory of Nyssa, is the "Symbol" or "Exposition of Faith" , a brief but accurate statement of the doctrine of the Trinity. The Nyssa testifies, moreover, that the handwritten copy of the "Symbol" is still preserved in the church of Neocaesarea the time he wrote the biography of the saint. St. Gregory of Nyssa learned these facts directly from his grandmother, Saint Macrina, who was was a disciple of the Healer, after being converted and baptized by him. Upon receipt of the apparition of the Virgin, St. Gregory Taumaturgo faced with great pastoral zeal of the episcopacy, and is historically known as "the Apostle of Pontus," the extensive work of evangelization carried out in the region and for the defense of Orthodoxy of faith. Tradition ascribes to the bishop of Neocaesarea a series of wondrous miracles, which earned him the title of "Healer". Died about 270.

Healer Healer in the words of St. Basil of Caesarea

*
"Gregory the Great and his words where you put it? Why not with the apostles and prophets? He was a man who walked in their own spirit and life followed in the footsteps of saints and throughout its existence remained with his conduct by the linearity of the Gospel. I say that would be unfair to the truth if you do not count among the family of God that this soul was like a huge torch that spreads its flaming glory in the church of God He had great power over demons, for the assistance of the Spirit, but also had such a grace in speaking to lead the nations to the obedience of faith, which, having found only seventeen Christians, led to God through knowledge of all the people of the city and countryside.
He diverted the course of mighty rivers commanding them in the name of Christ, a pond that had dried up because of strife between brothers greedy. His predictions of future events were not likely to be less than nothing in the great prophets. In short, it would be long to explain in detail the miracles of this man who, for the abundance of the gifts of grace working in him by the Spirit in every action powerful, signs and wonders, was called "second Moses" by the enemies of the same Church.
So in every word, every act done under the influence of grace shone like a light, a sign of heavenly power that accompanied him invisibly. Still has great admiration for him in the inhabitants of the country, and his memory is always new and fresh is rooted in the churches, nor the weather can be removed "(Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit , 74, in Elena Cavalcanti The experience of God in the Greek Fathers , Edizioni Studium, Roma 1984, pp. 213-214..)

Gregory of Nyssa, Life of Gregory Healer, New Town Editrice, Rome 1988

Translation, introduction and notes by Luigi Leone

Narrator experts and consumers, accurate and sophisticated connoisseur of Greek culture, the Nyssa gave the best of his plastic art and literature in this Life of Gregory Taumaturgo , sublimating and transforming the character through the filter of the ideal of the Gospel lived intensely by ascetics of his time and by him personally. He extols the virtues of the biographer in a series of scenes where it is difficult to reconcile the views of the hagiographic tradition and that of historical criticism, even if it is not impossible to harmonize the facts narrated with the policy of imperial Rome, the history of Christianity and the initial expansion the charismatic power of his missionaries. One thing is certain: the author believes in what he writes and, above all, exposing the virtuous life of the Healer, sent out a message of faith.
a jewel of ancient Christian literature. A biography of the drafting of which is owed largely to the oral tradition, but that Nyssa has enriched the art of a great storyteller, selecting and presenting the episodes in a suggestiva.

Gregory the Healer, Address to Origen, New Town Editrice, Rome 1983

Once, however, in the Palestinian city, meeting with Origen, that it had moved after being banished from Alexandria, had upset their plans. Fascinated by the personality of the teacher and converted to Christianity, renounced the study of law to embrace the philosophy and established their home in Caesarea. On the occasion of his retirement from the master (238), after five years, Gregory gave him a speech, in his presence and a large audience. Gregory became bishop of his hometown and worked for the spread of Christianity in Pontus. The
Acceptance speech Origen is an apology addressed to the teacher who was stripped of most of his mortal nature by virtue of the size of gifts that mark the transition from human to divine. It is the friend, the interpreter of the Logos, he points to Jesus as the unrivaled master of science, human and divine. The Speech is especially important for the description of the pedagogical method of Origen. The
Letter of Origen to Gregory was written a short time after the return home of the Healer. The teacher warns him, advised him to use his talent for having only half the Christian doctrine.

Gregory the Healer (?), Citation of Origen, Pauline, Milan 2002

Introduzione, traduzione e note di Marco Rizzi
*
Tradizionalmente attribuito a Gregorio il Taumaturgo, l’ Encomio di Origene veniva sino ad oggi considerato una fonte decisiva per illuminare l’attività di insegnamento del grande maestro alessandrino e per illustrarne la spiritualità, through the words of a pupil at the end of his studies.
This edition, however, along with a new and rigorous translation, offers innovative interpretation of this text of particular importance for the history of early Christianity. Through a careful analysis of both literary and rhetorical, historical and theological, political and philosophical ' Citation , are in fact brought to light intentions and ambitions far more depth and impact: to paint a picture of Christianity that could be understood and accepted by the intellectual and political elites of the Roman Empire, to propose a model of coexistence between the Empire and the new religion, founded on an ideal di vita coerente e rigoroso.

San Gregorio Taumaturgo: Patriarch Alexy II visits the Church of the Holy Moscow.

IL VIDEO DELLA VISITA
*
In this extraordinary figure of the early centuries of Christianity I have dedicated website www.sangregoriotaumaturgo.it , a "virtual" center of hagiographic and patristic studies that aims to connect the world of scholars and academic research with the places Gregorian worship in Italy and worldwide. In the course of many years of research on the history of the cult of the Healer, I drew a map of "Gregorian places." I went to many of these places, I explored the archives, I have become familiar with their communities, participated in their rituals and their processions, sometimes revealing surprising similarities between apparently distant worlds. A thin, but still visible, it seems to relate some of these centers with Stalybridge, in Calabria, the "original place" of the cult of the Healer in the West. Here, in ancient times, monks rite greek, Christian emigrants from the East, brought the relics of the saint, is still venerated in the ancient Byzantine church dedicated to him. The first of the "Gregorian places", which I presented on the website dedicated to the saint, is the church of San Gregorio Taumaturgo in Moscow. This is the main place of worship dedicated to the saint in the Orthodox world. Always in the hearts of his people, the beautiful church has been very effectively history of the city of Moscow itself remains marked by the tragedies, the contradictions, the joys and the deepest aspirations that have paved the way over the centuries. Closed by the communist regime, was returned to the faithful in 1990, thanks to the intervention of His Holiness Alexy II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, which almost every year in November, went to the church on the day of the commemoration of Santo. Only yesterday, the sinister symbol of the city's breach, the church lives on today as the Healer bright expression of redemption and a sign of hope. I reconstructed the story about www.sangregoriotaumaturgo.it , referring to official sources Russian Orthodox Church. Now I suggest watching a video documenting a visit by Patriarch Alexy II in Moscow to the beautiful church dedicated to Saint's feast day. Enjoy.

A website dedicated to St. Gregory Palamas

*
The site aims to present a little-known theologian in the West. St. Gregory Palamas was a Monaco, a mystic and Archbishop of Thessalonica. His work can be considered the fulfillment of the Eastern theological tradition, and his thinking is in fact part of the great Greek patristic tradition and develops the insights. Palamas is now considered the most important theologian of the Orthodox Byzantine Empire and one of the largest orthodoxy. His doctrine has deeply marked the Orthodox religious consciousness, as demonstrated by the fact that, after his canonization, the East celebrates his feast on the second Sunday Lent, after the "Sunday of Orthodoxy".

Twinning Stalybridge - Lisbon

The Museu de São Roque Lisbon communicate its availability to the project
*
During the conference I gave in Stalybridge, on 7 June, entitled "The cult of St. Gregory the Healer in Lisbon in the Age of Philip II" , I launched the idea of a twinning between Stalybridge and Lisbon and between the Library Hall Vivarium and Museu de São Roque , which had granted the cultural sponsorship the important cultural event. Actually, I had already proposed the initiative in the direction of the Museu de São Roque , one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in Portugal, during my study-in the Portuguese capital, obtaining a first availability to the project. The success of the conference, and the large emphasis has been in Portugal, led the Directorate of Museu de São Roque to send it a letter, which is officially reiterated the full support to the proposed twinning, which now will be designed in details with the town of Stalybridge, the Biblioteca Comunale Vivarium, the City of Lisbon and of course, the Museu de São Roque . The important Portuguese Museum preserves, in a splendid shrine, the skull of St. Gregory the Healer, who until the sixteenth century was in Stalybridge, in the church dedicated to the saint. During my lecture I had the opportunity to present a preview of the exceptional photographic documentation of the relic, thanks to the availability of the Museu de São Roque, who has decided to reopen, after several centuries, the precious relic, to allow the study of relic. On the occasion of the twinning can go back to the ancient relic Stalettì and be exposed for some time, with its shrine in the church of San Gregorio, where he was venerated for centuries. The letter sent by the Museu de São Roque is signed by Dr. António Meira, one of the chief executive of the Museum, on behalf of the Director of Administration and Teresa Morna Santa Casa da Misericórdia , the body that manages the Museu de São Roque . Here is the full text of the letter:
